My client Kaley has a similar history to a lot of us. She’s dieted a lot, by taking things to the extreme and nothing was sustainable. She found CrossFit, started getting excited about more than just what her body looked like. She was excited to see herself getting stronger and picking up new skills. Dialing in her nutrition was the next piece. This time was different though, as she wanted something that was sustainable and that would help her not only in her CrossFit, but to also improve her body composition. Oh, and as a bonus she got her cholesterol numbers back to the normal range. In just three months she went from 243 down to 213 (under 200 is normal). And her next check was at 163!!! This is despite doctors telling her it was genetic and exercise and diet would not help! So excited for her continued success!
“A little bit about myself. I’ve never really been one to stay on track with diets or trying to eat healthy. I would always attempt to eat healthy and then about a week later would fall off track. Back in college I was able to lose weight but that meant literally eating nothing, practically starving myself. I remember I went from 180 to about 120 in 8 months. I was eating so little that I noticed my hair was starting to thin out and I was always cold. After about a year of that, my body couldn’t sustain it and I went back to my normal habits and gained the weight back. I think I probably got back up to around 170.
I had been doing CrossFit for about 2.5 years and I hadn’t lost much weight but definitely was building some strength. I was staying after class and doing extra strength work. One of the coaches at my gym kept giving me the nudge to try the nutrition coaching. Finally I decided to give it a try. I never believed that it could actually work and didn’t think I would be able to stick with it more than a few months. Little did I know, I’ve been able to stick with counting macros for almost a year and a half now.
A huge factor for me was not only did I look great, but I also noticed how counting macros was changing my actual health. In 2015, my doctors noticed how high my cholesterol was and considered putting me on medicine to lower it. She sent out some detailed testing and the results said my total cholesterol was at 243 and it was hereditary so I probably can’t even change that number with exercise and diet changes. After counting macros for about 3 months my cholesterol dropped to 213. I was happy just to see it at that number last year! Then about a month ago I had it checked again and it came out to 163. The optimal number for cholesterol is 200 and below. I couldn’t believe that something the doctor didn’t think I could change, did – and drastically at that!
I also have seen changes in muscle composition. I originally started counting macros at 157 pounds and was about 26% body fat. I am now at 154 and 19% body fat. This goes to show that the number on the scale isn’t always the number to focus on. It’s still a daily battle to remember that but I’m learning to get better at it!
Now that I’ve been counting macros, I understand how the foods fuel my workouts. I’m much more competitive now and can do all of the movements. I used to not be able to do a pullup and now I can do ring and bar muscle ups! When I was overweight and not eating right I wasn’t as strong and was sluggish in workouts. Seeing how my eating habits fuel my body and keeps me healthy gives me motivation to stay on track each week.”
